In Mavericks, the OS has one more option before it has to resort to swapping: compressed memory. Mavericks will find the least-recently-used data in memory and compress it, usually to about half its original size. Et voilà, more free memory.
Like the HFS+ compression feature introduced in Snow Leopard, compressed memory trades relatively abundant CPU cycles for decreased disk I/O. The compression and decompression process is extremely fast, using the WKdm compression algorithm, and it will run in parallel, taking advantage of multiple CPU cores.
Apple ProRes 422 is a high-quality compressed codec offering nearly all the benefits of Apple ProRes 422 HQ, but at 66 percent of the data rate for even better multistream, real-time editing performance. The target data rate is approximately 147 Mbps at 1920x1080 and 29.97 fps.
Apple ProRes 422 LT is a more highly compressed codec than Apple ProRes 422, with roughly 70 percent of the data rate and 30 percent smaller file sizes. This codec is perfect for environments where storage capacity and data rate are at a premium. The target data rate is approximately 102 Mbps at 1920x1080 and 29.97 fps.
Apple ProRes 422 Proxy is an even more highly compressed codec than Apple ProRes 422 LT, intended for use in offline workflows that require low data rates but full-resolution video. The target data rate is approximately 45 Mbps at 1920x1080 and 29.97 fps.

The iPhone X offers some impressive video recording specs, including 4K/60p capture, slow-motion capture at up to 1080/240p, and optical image stabilization during recording. It can also record in a highly compressed 'HEVC' (H.265) format, which saves lots of space (and is required for 4K/60p), but at the expense of requiring conversion to a more established format for viewing on most other devices. That being said, importing a 4K/60p file through Image Transfer on Mac OS X automatically generated an H.264 file that played just fine on an older iMac. Those on Windows, however, will need to manually use conversion software to view the video files at this time.
Tstat will try to read trace files given as input, and to automatically identify the correct dump format. Trace files can be compressed or uncompressed, and Tstat will automatically detect the compression tool used (supported formats are compress, gzip, bzip2, 7z).
If Tstat has been compiled with Zlib support, it will directly create gzip compressed logs (.gz) when the command line option -Z is used. Internal compression might be CPU demanding: before enabling it, you should consider its possible effects on the Tstat performance.
If Tstat has been compiled with Zlib support, it will directly create gzip compressed traces (.pcap.gz) when the command line option -P is used. Internal compression of the packet traces is highly CPU demanding: before enabling it, you should consider its possible effects on the Tstat performance.
Note that the log_* can be further compressed, using the -Z Tstat command line option or gzip to less than 50MB, which gives a further 4x size gain; however, for a matter of performance, is preferable to compress the log files offline. 2ff7e9595c
